Is Rattan Furniture Suitable for Dubai's Climate?
Natural rattan works well indoors in Dubai; for outdoor spaces, synthetic all-weather rattan or teak is the better choice. Here's why, and how to make rattan last.
Short answer: Natural rattan is excellent indoors in Dubai, and in covered, shaded spaces. For terraces, gardens and pool areas exposed to direct sun, synthetic (all-weather) rattan or solid teak is the better choice.
Why natural rattan prefers the indoors
Rattan is a natural palm fibre. It is light, strong and flexible, which is why it is woven into chairs, swings, headboards and cabinet fronts. But in strong UV and high heat it gradually dries out, fades and can become brittle. Humidity followed by intense sun speeds this up. Indoors, away from direct sunlight, natural rattan lasts for many years.
The best rattan options for UAE outdoor spaces
Synthetic (all-weather) rattan: made to resist UV, heat and moisture. It gives the woven look without the maintenance, making it the go-to for outdoor sofas and dining chairs.
Teak with rattan details: teak frames hold up very well outdoors thanks to their natural oils. Pieces that combine a teak frame with woven panels work best under a pergola or covered terrace.
Natural rattan under full cover: a covered majlis or fully shaded balcony can suit natural rattan, as long as it stays out of direct midday sun and rain.
How to make rattan last in the UAE
Keep natural rattan out of direct sun and away from AC vents blowing straight onto it.
Dust weekly and wipe with a slightly damp cloth; avoid soaking the weave.
Use cushions and covers outdoors, and store or cover pieces during sandstorms.
Clean synthetic rattan with mild soap and water and let it dry in the shade.
Quick guide: where to use what
Living room, bedroom, dining room: natural rattan.
Covered terrace or pergola: teak with rattan details, or synthetic rattan.
Open garden or poolside: synthetic rattan or teak.
