The Daya Collection: one-off pieces from reclaimed slabs

Giving our customers the opportunity to own one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture, our newly launched Daya Collection uses slabs of wood to create unique, one-off pieces in all different shapes and sizes.

Using upcycled wood from exotic places around the world, we have sourced Raintree slabs from Panama and Dragon Wood slabs from Burma to create these bespoke products. The grains that shows from the Raintree is something else. The qualities and properties of this wood make it one of the most versatile products for furniture making – it is strong and durable, with a light yellow sapwood and rich dark chocolate-brown heartwood. The rich colour and beautiful but subtle grain of the heartwood, resembling black walnut makes wood from larger trees highly prized for table tops. Additionally, the wood is often cross-grained making it highly sought after for its robustness. It is also highly resistant to decay and termites and only requires basic maintenance such as soap & water to maintain its grandeur. Just like every seashell has a different pattern, so does raintree wood. The criss-cross nature of the grains brings about interesting designs and patterns on the wood – if you cut out a piece of Raintree ten different times, it’s highly likely that you’ll get ten different patterns.

Meanwhile, Dragon Wood has all the characteristics of Oak - its tightly knitted grains make the wood dense enough to handle the loads that come with heavy furniture, but still remains soft enough to work with. The fascinating texture of Dragon Wood gives this wood a special kind of appeal, with colours ranging from dark tones to light brown, sometimes with a hint of pink. As with many other types of woods, Dragon Wood will slowly get darker with age. While Dragon Wood is not a record holder in its native ability to remain trouble-free after a long period of time, modern wood processing manufacturers are managing to enhance its durability with finishing coating that can transform Dragon Wood into truly durable kind of wood which is perfect for household furniture.

Whilst the bulk of the exotic wood is used to make larger items, the Daya collection uses cut offs from custom projects which also ensures that no two pieces are the same. Each table created at Wood Culture is finished with hair pin metal legs and a smooth sanded exterior before being sold to their new home.
